About

The internet has no shortage of advice about how to think better, feel calmer, sleep more deeply, or quiet a busy mind.

What is harder to find is a clear answer to a simpler question:

What does the evidence actually say?

Science of Stillness Lab was created to explore that question.

Where Science Meets a Quieter Mind

This site explores the science behind the way we think, feel, rest, and regulate our internal state.

Topics may include neuroscience, psychology, stress, sleep, attention, breathing practices, overthinking, and other areas where scientific research intersects with everyday experience.

But the goal is not to turn every new study into a life-changing headline.

Quite the opposite.

A single study can be interesting without being definitive. A biological mechanism can be plausible without proving that an intervention works. And a finding observed under controlled conditions does not always translate neatly into everyday life.

Science of Stillness Lab exists in that space between what sounds scientific and what the evidence can actually support.

Beyond the Headline

Scientific ideas often become simpler as they travel across the internet.

Nuance disappears. Correlation becomes causation. Preliminary findings become “proven” facts. Complex brain networks become switches that supposedly just need to be turned on or off.

Here, we try to slow that process down.

When exploring a claim, we look beyond the headline and trace it back to the research behind it.

That means asking questions such as:

  • What did the study actually find?
  • Who was studied?
  • How strong is the evidence?
  • Are there other studies pointing in the same direction?
  • What are the limitations?
  • Does the popular explanation go further than the research does?
  • And, ultimately, what does any of this mean in real life?

Sometimes the evidence leads to a useful practical idea.

Sometimes the most accurate answer is simply: we don’t know yet.

Both are worth knowing.

Our Approach to Evidence

Science of Stillness Lab prioritizes high-quality scientific sources, including peer-reviewed research, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, academic publications, and authoritative scientific and health organizations where appropriate.

Whenever possible, important claims are traced to their original sources so readers can explore the evidence for themselves.

We also try to distinguish between emerging research and more established findings.

Science changes. New evidence can challenge old assumptions, and conclusions should change when the evidence does.

For that reason, articles may be reviewed and updated as better information becomes available.

Curiosity Without the Hype

Science of Stillness Lab isn’t built around finding a scientific justification for every wellness trend.

Nor is it about dismissing an idea simply because the evidence isn’t perfect.

The aim is to stay somewhere more useful in between: curious enough to explore, skeptical enough to question, and willing to change our minds when the evidence changes.

Because understanding the mind doesn’t always require another dramatic promise.

Sometimes it just requires looking more carefully at what we actually know.
